Breast Implants (Augmentation)
Silicone Implants
Silicone implants became available again in November, 2006. Women, age 22 and older, now have another option when choosing the type of implant for breast augmentation. Most patients describe these implants as having a softer feel and more natural appearance with less incidence of “wrinkling”. Silicone implants have been deemed safe by the FDA. We have seen many patients choose these implants instead of saline implants.
To learn more about the options available, please contact our knowledgeable staff. We would be very happy to schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Greene for you.
Longterm studies have shown the following:
- Implants do not cause cancer
- Implants may slightly obscure the ability of a mammogram to visualize the entire breast
- There may be a small percentage of women who react unfavorably to implants.
- The vast majority of women are very happy with their implants!
Capsular Contracture
In a small percentage of women, the normal scar tissue surrounding the implant may harden or contract, causing an abnormal implant pocket to develop. The breast may feel firm, may appear abnormally high, and in some cases, be painful. If this occurs, you may be treated with oral medications to hopefully soften the tissue. If this is not successful, the patient may choose removal of the implant with or without replacement.
Sensation
Although no surgeon can guarantee complete preservation of normal feeling, careful and meticulous attention to detail usually results in normal sensation of the nipple and breast.
Connective Tissue Diseases
Although studies have shown no direct correlation between implants and the onset of these diseases, women with connective tissue diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, and others) should discuss these health conditions with Dr. Greene carefully prior to augmentation.
Augmentation Ptotic "Droopy" Breasts
After childbearing, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss, the breasts can lose breast tissue causing a dropped or saggy appearance to the breasts. Breast implants cannot “lift” the breast, but in certain cases, can replace some of the lost volume, giving a fuller, more youthful appearance to the breasts.

Augmentation Tubular Breasts
Some patients, due to heredity, have breasts that have an elongated appearance with an unusually prominent areola complex. This presents a more challenging breast augmentation surgery, but results in a much more natural and pleasing appearance of the breasts.
