Breast Surgery
Greater than 300,000 women in the USA underwent breast augmentation in 2006. The majority of women seeking enlargement request a breast size which is balanced for their body type. However, there are patients who request very large implants. Either of these may be accomplished if the patient's anatomy will tolerate it. Most women in 2006 elected to undergo placement of saline (salt water) implants; however, silicone implants became available in November, 2006, for the first time since 1992, for primary breast augmentation. Implants may be placed above or below the pectoralis (chest) muscle. They may be placed through an incision below the breast, around the nipple, or in the axilla (armpit).
